Merrick House changed my entire life. I met adults there that took an interest and pushed me to get an education. I then worked for Clark-Fulton Community Center. I am very thankful for all that Merrick House has done.

I live by the Union Gospel Press Building, and I tell you the work they have been doing to the building is awesome.

I know that this is a historical site and they have to restore a lot of things as they were but I doubt that the inside will look the same as you seen it because there are a lot of changes going on inside, there are walls where there were none and also openings in the brck where there were none... I hope they leave a lot intaked, but it will never look like it did inside like in the early days.

Hello. This is my grandfather's article and I can't believe I found this! I miss him very much, we used to be very close and spent a great amount of time together when I was a kid. He died almost two years ago this August. I enjoyed many of his stories he would share with me from when he was a boy. If anyone would like anymore information, I could always ask my dad (Tom Jr.), my Grandma Jeanette Woznicki (Tom's wife) and my grandfather's sister for information. I hope you enjoyed this article! My grandfather was one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life - he went to Church almost every day and he treated everyone with kindness and love. I love him greatly and miss him very much. Thank you for posting this!
Love always,
Nyssa Lauren Woznicki

rev. richard ondreyka became pastor of st. wendelin before rev. lajack and was very instrumental in starting urban community school that saved st. wendelin, st. patricks and st. malichi schools from closing...and to this date urban community school is very much alive in its new building and thanks to rev. ondreyka for that and his many years of service to st. wendelin for keeping it from closing and total colapse.

I attented Tremont Elementary in 1949 while living in the old projects on W6th street. I and two other of my schoolmates were chosen to pose for the opening of the Merrick House in the then "new" shower facility. We appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer sunday section and i was a minor celebrity for a day!! I remember that they sponsered the Cub and Boy Scouts and also organized sandlot baseball. The ball fields were terrible but i found out that if you could play well there you could play anywhere! After moving to Miami in 1950 i used that experience to get to the national Pony League finals years later.

I really enjoyed reading this. It brought back some memories. My time in the area does not go back as far. We lived on W. 25 and then moved up in the world to W. 18 off Rowley. This was in the late 40's. It good to hear the neighborhood is on the upswing. I think, in a way, we were all guilty of the downfall of the city, by leaving it for the suburbs. Anyway, thanks

I have been inside this building and all I can say is "Wow!" A friend lived on Jefferson and took me twice. I would definatly like to go back for pictures. There is a wooden locker room type area. A large cafeteria done in small tile with two huge vault doors. A courtyard with a large tree sculpture in the middle reaching to the building. It was like catacombs in the lower levels. I can go on and on. Amazing.

You should mention the Chelsea apartment building across the street from Zion. It was built in 1898 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's architect is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Rumor has it that it was the first high rise in the city and had the first elevator in the state!
